Sonia Raman becomes first Indian-origin Head Coach in WNBA
Her reported appointment with Seattle Storm makes her the first person of South Asian origin to lead any WNBA/NBA team.
In a groundbreaking move, Sonia Raman has been appointed as the new head coach of the Seattle Storm, marking another historic milestone for Indian-origin representation in global basketball. The news was first reported by NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.
Raman, who served as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty last season, has reportedly agreed to a multiyear deal with the Storm, making her the first Indian-origin head coach across WNBA/NBA.
From Memphis to New York
Before joining the WNBA ranks, Raman made history in the NBA when she was hired by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2020, becoming the first Indian-American woman to serve as an assistant coach in the league. She remained with the Grizzlies until 2024 before moving to the Liberty.
With this latest appointment, Raman becomes the first person of Indian origin to take the helm as a WNBA head coach, continuing to break barriers for women and South Asians in professional basketball.
A Defining Moment for South Asian Representation
Raman’s rise has been one of persistence and purpose. Prior to her NBA tenure, she was the head coach at MIT for over a decade, where she was known for her tactical discipline and emphasis on player development. Her journey from the collegiate sidelines to the NBA and now to a WNBA head coaching role stands as a powerful testament to representation and excellence.
