The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Basketball Federation of India was held in Chennai on June 8.
The 2nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the new regime of BFI was held at the National Sports Centre in Chennai on June 8.
Key Player Centric Announcements
The AGM saw numerous significant announcements, including the following five, that directly impact players:
3x3 Nationals in younger age categories: Introduction of various U-16, U-18, and U-23 3x3 National Championships to nurture player development in the 3x3 category.
Immediate Play: Newly appointed players, e.g., players from Railways and Services, can now play immediately, removing the previous six-month waiting period.
Increased Participation: Players can now participate in 10 Nationals, an increase from the previous limit of 7, with the distribution being 3 Sub-Junior, 3 Youth, and 4 Junior categories.
Mandatory Play: All 12 team members must play in the 5x5 Nationals for the Sub- Junior, Youth, and Junior categories, ensuring comprehensive development and experience for all players. Rules and regulations will be shortly released, and this will be implemented in the upcoming Nationals.
Introduction of U23 Nationals in 5v5: This new category will serve to bridge the gap between youth and senior-level competition, providing more opportunities for player growth and progression. The first U23 Nationals will be conducted in Assam, aiming to benefit college-level players.
Why the increase from 7 to 10 Nationals?
Explaining the rationale behind allowing players to participate in 10 Nationals from the earlier limit of 7, BFI President Mr Aadhav Arjuna said:
“As per existing rules, a player is eligible to participate in NOT MORE than 07 (Seven) Age Group National Championships. This rule was implemented to curb the possibility of players who produce fake/not genuine DOB certificates from participating.
➢With the players now MANDATORILY submitting an AFFIDAVIT from a parent confirming the date of birth and holding themselves responsible for any such wrong information being provided with the date of birth of their child.
➢This would benefit a deserving player from being deprived of participation especially since this would enable them to secure admission in Universities/Colleges and making them eligible for jobs since there are certain rules regarding periodicity and validity of the certificate.”
