Paramjit Singh, Captain of India's only Olympic basketball team, passes away
The Arjuna Awardee also had the distinction of leading the Indian teams at the Asian Basketball Championships in Bangkok (1975) and Kuala Lumpur (1977).
It is being reliably learnt that former Indian basketball team captain Paramjit Singh, popularly known as ‘Pammi’ within the community, is no more.
Mr Singh breathed his last on February 22, at his residence in Ajmer, after battling a long illness, at age 72.
Mr Singh had captained India’s only basketball team to have ever participated in the Olympics - in the 1980 Moscow edition.
The Arjuna Awardee also had the distinction of leading the Indian teams at the Asian Basketball Championships in Bangkok (1975) and Kuala Lumpur (1977).
Nationally, Mr Singh had represented the Indian Railways and Western Railways in numerous championships, and retired from the latter as a Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, after a three-decade long service.
Mr Singh was also a member of the Indian team selection committee, as a government nominee for a period of eight years.
