India Women's Basketball Rankings sees steep fall
The latest FIBA World Ranking, as updated on August 21 2023, also has the Indian team dropping out of the top 10 teams in Asia.
As a direct result of non-participation in last month’s FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Division B, the Indian women’s basketball team has suffered a sharp decline of 10 spots in the latest World Rankings.
From being 57th in the world, India now stands at 67, just outside the bottom five teams in terms of worst ‘fallers’.
Even within the Asia Zone, the Indian team has fallen out of the top 10 teams, and now stands at #11 (excluding Australia and New Zealand).
In sharp contrast to India, four of the other Asian teams that took part in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Division B: Indonesia, Iran, Jordan and Thailand - have all leapfrogged India in the rankings.
Thailand, in particular, has seen a massive jump of 39 spots, from being out of the top 100 teams, to now sitting at the 62nd position.
China #2 in the World
Among the teams leading the pack are the USA, followed by China, Australia, Spain and Canada.
China was able to retain its position having won the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Division A title earlier this year.
Besides China, the only other Asian team in the top 10 globally is Japan (#9), with Korea coming in at #13.
As far as India is concerned, it’s women’s team will finally return to international competition at the Asian Games starting in end September.
