Earlier this June, the Special Cell - Delhi Police announced the arrest of former Haryana State-level basketball player, Sunil, in the murder case of Surender Matiala, President of Najafgarh Zone Kisan Morcha.
As reported in various media, Sunil, aged 30, hails from Jhajjar District in Haryana and is a graduate of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
Matiala was reported to be a Kisan Morcha leader of BJP’s Delhi unit. On April 14, two men allegedly barged into his office and shot him dead.
Thereafter, raids were carried out in various locations across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. It was in one of these raids that Sunil was apprehended in the Rohini area of the national capital. Sunil is said to have been carrying a pistol loaded with three live cartridges at the time of his arrest.
Sunil alias ‘Silla’ is reported to be a wanted criminal belonging to the UK-based gangster Kapil Sangwan aka Nandu-Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate, which gained notoriety last year for its alleged involvement in the assassination of famed rapper Sidhu Moose Wala.
During interrogation, Sunil reportedly revealed that he was introduced to Sangwan via a former school mate named Rohit.

It is unfortunately not uncommon for former sportspersons in the Haryana/NCR belt - notably from wrestling - to turn to crime. But this is probably the first reported instance of a basketball player being similarly accused. Let’s hope this proves to be an exception rather than the rule.
