The FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2024 for Men will be held at the Prince Hamza Sport Hall in Amman, Jordan from September 2 to 8.
India’s campaign starts against defending champions Korea at 10 pm on 2nd September.
India’s Grouping
There are 16 participating teams from Asia and Oceania, and India has been placed in Group B alongside heavyweights Korea, Iran, and lower-ranked Kuwait.
The top team from each group will progress directly to the quarterfinals, while the second and third-placed teams will proceed to the pre-quarterfinals.
The Indian team is ranked a respectable 41st in the world, which is slightly behind Korea (#32), and Iran (#20). Kuwait, meanwhile, is way behind at #87.
However, rankings don’t mean too much at the younger age divisions, as evidenced by Korea’s title run in the previous 2022 edition, beating Japan 77-73 in the finals.
So, undisputed South Asian Champions India will have its work cut out to progress to the knockout stages.
India’s Past Record
Since 1970, when the FIBA U18 Asia Cup for Men was first held (under the earlier names ‘Asian Basketball Confederation Junior Championship’ and ‘FIBA Under-18 Asian Championship’), India has participated 21 times, never finishing among the medals.
India’s best finish was 4th in 1972. However, that edition featured only 7 total teams.
In the previous 2022 edition, India was eliminated at the group stage itself, after losing to China and Korea.
India Games’ Schedule (in IST)
