Fergusson College has won Season I of the Deccan Gymkhana Inter-college Basketball Championship. Fergusson beat Ness Wadia College 87-59 with Yousuf Sayyed leading all scores with 31 points for the winners. Ness Wadia had to be content with their star player Faizan Shaikh receiving the most valuable player of the tournament award.

About the Deccan Gymkhana Inter-college Basketball Championship

This tournament is a revived version of the once iconic inter-college matches that India’s largest Sport Club Deccan Gymkhana used to host over a couple of decades ago. Choosing quality over quantity, 16 top teams in the boys section were invited to participate in this league-cum-knockout tournament. The winners earned Rs.10,000/-, runners took home Rs.5,000/- and the Best Player was richer by Rs.2,500/-.

Not willing to bow to the fact that sponsors are hard to find, especially for a college level local tournament, a dozen senior players of the Basketball Department of Deccan Gymkhana came together to raise the money needed to revive this tournament that would give local basketball players yet another platform to display their talent, get some practice and learn to enjoy the game.

Deccan Gymkhana aspires to be very active and have over half a dozen new tournaments during this year. This is the second tournament organised by Deccan Gymkhana after the huge success of the Malaka Spice 3 on3 Basketball Championship that took place in August.
