Bhavnagar: Bhavnagar Basketball League Season 4 concluded last night at the Sports Authority of Gujarat Indoor Stadium.
The venue of the upcoming Senior National Basketball Championship, played host to the top young ballers in the district - right from the U14, U16, U18 and Senior (Under 27) age categories - both in boys/men and girls/women.
The League was played in the 3x3 format.
The Queen in attendance!
Adding to the significance of the finale weekend, the Maharani of Bhavnagar, Her Highness Smt. Samyukta Kumari Ji Saheba Gohil graced the occasion, along with other team owners and the title sponsor.
Not only was the Maharani present, being a former basketball player and team owner herself (of ‘Nilambag Players’) she was seen actively cheering on all participants.
Also in attendance were Bhavnagar Basketball District Association President Mr Bhagirathsinh Jadeja, Gujarat Basketball Association President Mr Shaktisinh Gohil and other former international players from the city.
Eight finals back to back!
Coming to the on-court action, the day started with third place aka ‘hardline’ games in the morning, with the finals in all eight categories tipping off in the evening, in front of a packed stadium of players and parents.
From the younger age categories to the older ones - the finale games kept ratcheting up in intensity and skill levels - with multiple stand-out performances.
But towering above them all was the 7ft 1’’ Yogesh Mer. The 18-year-old started playing basketball only a year ago, having been discovered from the nearby Limbda village through sheer chance. (More on this later!)
Led by Mer, his team MG TMX breezed past BIMS Warriors 21-9 to bring the curtains down to an otherwise highly competitive series of finals games.
