BFI Proposes Indian Basketball League retaining 100% ownership
Basketball Federation of India (BFI) to Launch 'National Star Basketball Leagues' in both 3x3 and 5v5, for both Men and Women
In a potentially groundbreaking move for Indian basketball, the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) has proposed the launch of two national-level leagues: the National Star Basketball 3x3 League and the National Star Basketball 5x5 League. These leagues will feature both men's and women's divisions, marking a significant step forward in the development of basketball in the country.
Retaining Full Ownership
Maintaining full ownership of the leagues, the BFI will onboard an Organising Partner through a rigorous selection process. This Partner will be granted a 7-year license to oversee the operations of the leagues. Interested parties can bid for the rights to organize either one or both leagues, subject to meeting specific criteria outlined by the BFI.
Among the requirements for the Organising Partner is the payment of an annual royalty fee to the BFI, along with a commitment to invest in league marketing and operations. The selection process will prioritize entities with prior experience in organizing sporting events, assessing their financial capability, operational expertise, and marketing strategies.
Eligibility for application extends to a variety of registered entities, including private and public limited companies, LLPs, partnership firms, trusts, and societies. Foreign companies are also invited to apply, provided they register in India upon successful bid acceptance.
8-12 Teams Each
Both leagues will feature a minimum number of teams, with the National Star Basketball 5x5 League comprising a minimum of 8 teams per division, and the National Star Basketball 3x3 League featuring a minimum of 12 teams per division.
The tendering process will be overseen by Hon'ble Justice Mr. Ravindra Bhat, a Learned Former Judge of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. BFI will issue separate tenders for each league, inviting potential Organising Partners to submit their bids.
In addition to league organization, the BFI will establish Governing and Auditing Councils to ensure the smooth functioning and integrity of the leagues.
Auctions for players and teams
Auctions for players and teams will also be a key aspect of the leagues, with the BFI collaborating with the selected Organising Partner to develop a comprehensive structure. This will include defining player tiers for auctions and finalizing player retention and release policies through stakeholder consultation.
Further details regarding the tendering process and league operations will be provided in the forthcoming tender documents released by the BFI, promising an exciting future for basketball enthusiasts across India.
