BFI President Announces India Basketball League Pathway for Top U18 Talent
The initiative aims to identify the 60 players from the Junior National championship and provide them with a fast track into the professional league.
The 76th Junior National Basketball Championship, held in Puducherry from May 22 to 29, brought together some of India’s most promising young basketball players from across the country.
During the event’s inauguration ceremony, Basketball Federation of India (BFI) President Aadhav Arjuna announced that the top 60 under-18 players from the championship would be identified through scouting and invited to special tryouts for the Indian Basketball League (IBL).
According to the announcement, scouts would assess all players throughout the tournament before selecting the best-performing 60 prospects for the IBL tryout process. The initiative was widely welcomed as a potential bridge between grassroots and professional basketball in India.
With the championship having concluded last month, further details regarding the next phase of the initiative are awaited. Information regarding the selected players, the format of the tryouts, and the timeline for the process has not yet been publicly announced.
Next Steps
The announcement generated considerable interest among players, coaches, and parents, many of whom are keen to learn more about the selection process and the upcoming tryouts.
The Junior National Championship is the country’s biggest stage for youth basketball talent, bringing together players from across almost every state and union territory. As a result, the proposed IBL tryouts are viewed as an important opportunity for emerging players to showcase their abilities and potentially take a step closer to the IBL ranks.
