Basketball Federation of India launches Women's Safety Helpline Number
The provided number, which also supports WhatsApp, claims to allow victims of sexual harassment to register their complaints confidentially with BFI’s Internal Complaints Committee
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, late last night, the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) announced the launch of a Women’s Safety Helpline Number: +91 99940 74853.
The provided number, which also supports WhatsApp, claims to allow victims of sexual harassment to register their complaints confidentially with BFI’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) led by its Chairperson Ms Meenalatha Mohan. The ICC is tasked with addressing any concerns relating to sexual harassment, gender based violence etc.
Additionally, complaints can also be made via email to basketballfederationindia@gmail.com.
Yesterday’s letter, issued by BFI President Mr Aadhav Arjuna, highlighted the unique challenges faced by India’s women’s basketball players that stemmed from “deeply ingrained societal norms and expectations”.
The letter also specifically noted how in rural areas, “the decision to wear shorts and engage in basketball represents a profound act of courage and empowerment.”
