Puducherry, 3rd February 2016: On the morning of the second day of the Arise Steel 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship underway here at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Puducherry, defending champions Kerala girls were stunned by the Karnataka girls team who came back from a double-digit deficit to clinch a 4-point victory 40 to 36. Aanaga led the way for Karnataka with 12 points. Last year’s runners-up Chhattisgarh also lost today morning in an extra time thriller against Maharashtra. Shruti Bhosale’s 20 points tipped the match in favour of Maharashtra who won by the slimmest of margins (71-70) against Chhattisgarh. In the other girls’ games, Haryana picked up an easy victory against West Bengal, while Rajasthan pulled off a close victory 53-52 against Punjab. Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh girls also registered wins on the second day against Delhi and Bihar respectively.
In the boys’ games on Day 2, defending champions Madhya Pradesh won their second game in the tournament, this time against Haryana 53-39. Last year’s runners up Chhattisgarh boys defeated the Uttar Pradesh team in comfortable fashion 47 to 32. The Tamil Nadu boys also picked up their second victory with a 67-62 win against Punjab in a close game, led by S. Sharan, who scored a game-high 22 points. The Odisha and Maharashtra boys were also involved in an extra time nail-biter with Odisha clinching a 4-point victory 60 to 56. Karnataka boys played their first game of the tournament today and defeated the Jammu and Kashmir team 39 to 24. The Telangana boys also emerged victorious in their game against Tripura, handily defeating them 71-20.

In the second half, Odisha girls got the better of Chandigarh with a 29-26 victory. Chandigarh boys also lost their game by a big margin against Rajasthan, who picked up their second victory. The host teams, Puducherry girls and boys tasted defeat for the second successive day with losses to the Gujarat girls and the Kerala boys. The Delhi boys impressed in their game on the outdoor court today afternoon defeating Bihar 47-35. West Bengal boys completely dominated Goa in their level 2 game achieving a 46-5 victory.
Last year’s runners up and favourites in this year’s tournament, Chhattisgarh boys played their second game of the day in the afternoon, defeating Andhra Pradesh and setting the record for the highest team score in the tournament thus far, breaching the century mark. The final score was 103 to 36 in favour of Chhattisgarh. The girls team from Chhattisgarh also had two games today. After their 1-point loss to Maharashtra in the morning, Chhattisgarh bounced back registering a 64-49 win against Madhya Pradesh, led by Elizabeth Ekka’s 19 points.

About the 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship
The 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship is being organised in Puducherry from the 2nd to the 8th of February 2016 at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. There are two indoor courts inside the complex, named Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, along with one outdoor court in the complex dedicated to the tournament. This year’s event is being organised by the Puducherry Basketball Association under the aegis of the Basketball Federation of India. The Sub-Junior Nationals is an annual national tournament for U-14 boys’ and girls’ teams from states across India. This year’s tournament is witnessing the participation of 23 boys’ teams and 21 girls’ teams. Arise Steel is the main sponsor for the tournament.
The 41st Sub-Junior Nationals were conducted in Nashik, Maharashtra, where the Kerala girls and the Madhya Pradesh boys emerged victorious clinching the gold medals. Chhattisgarh girls and boys were the second placed teams. The 2013 version tournament was conducted in Patna, Bihar. The Chhattisgarh teams won both the boys and the girls category last year, while the Madhya Pradesh boys and the Tamil Nadu girls finished runners-up respectively.
