Manjeri, 28th November, 2016: Pathanamthitta Men and Thiruvananthapuram Women were crowned the Champions on Sunday as the 61st Kerala State Basketball Championship was concluded. The state title came for Pathanamthitta after a Gap of 24 years. The mens final between Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram began with an evenly fought 1st half of 43-43. Pathanamthitta had a good bunch of outside shooters. Three-pointers from Hari Krishna Haridas, A.R. Akhil and Tinu Thomas turned the game in Pathanamthitta's favour in the dying minutes. The trio of international players: Stephy Nixon, Ajamnna and Jeena PS made a difference for Thiruvananthapuram, in their finals game against Thrissur. Anjana drove in freely and scored with lay-ups, while Stephy, despite Thrissur’s youth international Nimmy George running in circles around her, had it easy all evening. The point guard, Grima Merlin Varghese, performed her role well. Anjanna, PG of Thiruvananthapuram, who hails from Kollam and works with KSEB, and Akhil A R of Pathanamthitta who hails from Pullad, Tiruvalla and stfudies in Mar Ivanios College, were chosen to recieve the Best Player Award of 2016, the PS Viswappan Gold Medal.
