2026 NBA All-Star Weekend: Badshah's Assist Goes VIRAL!
With less than five minutes on court, Badshah still had more of a basketball impact than two out of the previous three Indian celebrity game participants.
Indian multi-platinum rapper Badshah made his debut at the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on February 13, 2026, in California. Playing for Team Anthony Anderson, the music icon was on the court for less than five minutes.
But one play changed the narrative.
A clean assist to Nicolas Vansteenberghe turned into one of the most viral moments of the night.
In a format that often prioritises entertainment over actual basketball, the Indian rapper’s assist stood out for its swag.
After the game, Badshah summed up the experience on Instagram:
“Having probably the most MAST (best) time bhai logon… Always wanted to see an NBA basketball court live at least once in my life. And when it finally happened, look at the irony, I didn’t even see the court, I walked straight onto it to PLAY! Not as a spectator. Not from the stands. As a player.”
Celebrity x Sport Activation: Are Skills Finally Starting to Matter?
From a hardcore Indian basketball fan point of view, after the disappointment of back-to-back Ranveer Singh appearances (where he went scoreless), it was a refreshing shift in strategy towards leveraging celebs with some actual playing experience.
In 2025, AP Dhillon became the first Indian to score in an NBA All-Star game, and now Badshah delivered a legitimate assist that actually impacted play. Whether their selections were pure coincidence or deliberate strategy remains unclear. But it was good to see early signs of NBA India trying to balance celebrity fandom without alienating core fans.
For years, Indian sports marketing has often treated celebrity worship and sports culture as mutually exclusive.
But they are not.
When brands and leagues identify stars with genuine playing experience or a connection to the sport, it shows respect for the authentic fan base. It also enhances credibility, as such collaborations can strengthen India’s budding basketball ecosystem rather than simply pursuing short-term goals.
In a world where ‘quick virality’ is prioritised, a well-strategised selection of celebrities goes a long way toward avoiding brand dilution.
