The unexpectedly close warm-up games featuring star-studded Team USA have added an extra layer of buzz to what promises to be an action-packed basketball event at the Olympics.
Led by 39-year-old LeBron James, who was also named the co-flag bearer of the USA Olympic contingent, a belated Olympic debutant in Stephen Curry, and the highest scorer in USA Basketball history Kevin Durant (who is also gunning to win an unprecedented four Olympic gold medals in men’s basketball) - Team USA, on paper, is as strong as it can be.
However, in the five showcase games played in the Olympic run-up, while USA won them all, three of the wins were arguably too close for comfort - especially a one-point thriller over South Sudan.
While United States’ offensive firepower and depth is a sight to behold, its team defense has looked porous at times. Also from an individual point of view, the big question is whether Durant will play - having missed all five tune-up games due to a calf injury.
That said, USA remains overwhelming favourites to win its fifth straight Olympic gold medal - a glorious run that began with the 2008 ‘Redeem Team’.
