13th Rev Devasia Memorial Inter-School Basketball Tournament concludes in Hyderabad with Oakridge boys and Future Kids emerging as winners

The 13th Rev. Fr. M Devasia Memorial Inter-School Basketball Tournament for boys and girls concluded earlier today at the St. Patrick's High School in Hyderabad. The event, conducted by the school under the auspices of the Hyderabad District Basketball Association ran from 27th July to 1st August 2015. Ultimately, Oakridge International boys and Future Kids girls were crowned champions.

BOYS:  Oakridge International were crowned the Champions beating Delhi Public School 45 – 20 in the finals after comfortably leading 21 – 10 at half time. Oakridge dominated the proceedings from the start scoring regularly through Venkat, Hrithik and Kaushik and were leading 13 – 5 at end of 1st quarter. In the remaining part of the match they consolidated their lead.  Venkat (Adjudged Best Player of the tournament) scored 19 points and Hrithik with 9 points lent him good support. For Delhi Public School, Sujeeth (Adjudged best upcoming player of the tournament) waged a lone battle to score 14 points.

GIRLS: Future Kids scored a comeback win over Delhi Public School 26 – 22 after they were trailing  10 – 12 at half time. In a low scoring match, both the teams played tight defense, however, Kashish of DPS, using her speed scored 3 quick baskets to lead 10 – 6 at end of 1st quarter. However, in the 2nd quarter, Future Kids regained their composure scoring twice with Arya coming off the bench, to reduce the lead to 10 – 12 at half time. After change of ends, Future Kids continued their rhythm and scoring through Dhatri and Aastha, to retake the lead 20 – 17 at end of 3rd quarter. In a well contested 4th quarter, both played a fast paced game, however Future Kids held onto the lead till the end.

The Future Kids girls scored a hard fought 29 – 20 win over Chirec Public  School to enter the finals with Delhi Public School who scored a convincing 19 – 9 win over Holy Family High School.  In the boys section defending champions Oakridge International brushed aside the challenge of Chirec Public School 39 – 19 whereas Delhi Public School scored a comfortable 43 – 18 win over Future Kids. Chirec and Future Kids girls in a displayed good defensive plays from the start and there were many lead changes, Future Kids leading 9 – 8 at half time, however Aikya and Ishita of Chirec combined well to score 2 quick baskets in the dying minutes of 3rd quarter  to lead          16 – 15 at end of 3rd quarter. However in 4th quarter Future Kids played a fast paced game to score 14 points and did very tight defense to restrict Chirec to only 4 points and there by winning  29 – 20.

Results: Day 3: Boys Quarterfinals

Quarterfinal match between Chirec Public School and Little Flower High School. Vineet (White) of Chirec Public School defends the attempt by Sufiyan (Blue) of Little Flower High School.

Chirec Public  School  scored a thrilling 24 – 21 win over Little Flower High School to set up a semi-final clash with defending champions Oakridge International who brushed aside the challenge of Gitanjali Devashray 40 – 15. Delhi Public School scored a comfortable 31 – 14 win over Indus Universal School to set up semi-final with Future Kids who had to work hard for its 34 – 22 win over hosts St. Patrick’s High School. Chirec and Little Flower displayed good offensive and defensive plays and there were many lead changes and it was anyone’s game. Chirec was trailing 4 – 5 at end of 1st quarter, however Vineet and Vishal combined well using their height advantage to good effect to score in the paint to take the lead 13 – 9 at half time. In the 2nd half too, both the teams were going neck to neck, but Chirec held on to the lead to win the match 24 – 21. Anirudh of Chirec though, scored only 6 points but controlled the game well with good dribbling skills and deceptive passes.

Last year runner-up Holy Family scored a comfortable 21 – 7 victory over St. Anthony’s Girls High School to enter the semi-finals of the 13th Rev. Fr. M. Devasia Memorial Inter School Basketball tournament at St. Patrick’s High School. The 1st quarter was well fought with both the teams playing tight defense and offense with scores 7 – 5 in favour of Holy Family. However, in the remaining 3 quarters Holy Family showed very tight defense and scored heavily through Pooja and Chandrika to comfortably win the match.

Before the start of the matches all the players/officials maintained 2 minutes silence to give homage on account of the sad demise of Ex-President Sri. APJ Abdul Kalam.

Chirec vs All Saints.

Little Flower High School scored an thrilling 34 – 30 victory over MGM High School after leading 13 – 10 at half time.  From the start Little Flower played a fast paced game to score through Sufiyan and Anas and with very tight defence blanked MGM 8 – 0 at end of 1st quarter. However, MGM recovered in the 2nd quarter to reduce the margin to 10 – 13 at half time. MGM continued their fightback in the 2nd half and both teams were locked 29 – 29 with just 2 minutes for the final whistle. However, Sifiyan and Anas of Little Flower scored two quick baskets to seal the match in their favour.

The tournament was earlier inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Dhanpal;  Rev. Fr. KP Francis; Rev. Fr. Philemon Raj and St. Patrick’s Alumni Network.
